Abstract EN

Love and war are two different opposing extremes.

Whereas love is a force of creation and life, war is a force of destruction and death.

In Romantic literature, however, they are used, together, as a frequent literary theme, especially in stories and novels written during or about war time.

Despite differences.

Earnest Hemingway's A Farewell to Arms and Qasham Balata's Runaway to Nowhere intersect in more than one way exploring similar ideas.

The two works' titles suggest a motion—sl motion evoked by fear and war.

Both novels present a touching love story that must survive the harsh reality of a violent war.

Both feature lovers who experience life-threatening situations, but escape through love.

It is only at the end when they discover that death, brought by war itself, is the ultimate end of it all.

The present study is divided into two major sections.

The first introductory one is a brief general study of how war has been reflected and presented in the modern American and Kurdish novels.

Through careful investigation and sufficient illustration and analysis of the two novels, the second section examines how both novels present an anti-war attitude, how true love becomes a form of escape from the grim reality of war, and finally, how this escape is only a fantasy as love is defeated by death from the war.
