Abstract EN
World War I (1914-1918) brought many drastic consequences.
There were complications due to the technical progress along with the deterioration of social ties in modern society.
Those factors increased the conflict of man.
That conflict was reflected in the works of writers whose minds were under the catastrophic impact of modern society.
Modern age witnessed the emergence of different schools in art and literature.
One of the most important literary movements in drama was Expressionism.
Expressionism involved the use of various devices to express, in written and pictorial form, the inner meaning of life.
Expressionism is an effort to discover a technique expressing the dramatist’s attempt to explore the inner reality of his plays.
Expressionism reflected the psychological state more than any other dramatic mode.
The expressionistic playwrights aimed at revealing the inner life of human beings and focused on the conflict in the psyche of the characters in their plays.
The tendency was to minimize the setting until it indicates only the absolute essentials of form and features.
In expressionistic drama the speech was heightened, whether expansive and rhapsodic, or clipped and telegraphic.
In expressionistic drama the speech was heightened, whether expansive and rhapsodic, or clipped and telegraphic.
