English Abstract

Thornton Wilder’s The Skin of Our Teeth reflects Wilder’s rather queer, but wonderful fusion of modern man, history, and Expressionism.

This fusion produced Wilder’s optimistic view point concerning man’s never ending story of surviving calamities which he attributed to two main forces: hope and faith.

By using expressionistic theatre Wilder tried to raise his revolting voice that rejects the “soothing” theatre of the rising middle class and to replace it with a more expressive one that penetrates into the depth of modern man’s needs to build a better society.

The research concentrates on Wilder’s new concept of time that pushed him to seek new ways of theatrical presentation to make his ideas understandable and acceptable to his audience whom he relied heavily on their imagination to perceive and interpret the significance of this play.

Moreover, the research explains that Wilder’s debt to the expressionistic movement lies in its technique rather than in its theme or overall vision since even though they shared the same theme; they differ in their perspective in perceiving or interpreting it.
