Efficiency of broomrape control in heavily broomrape- infested-fields of organically grown tomato by pre-plant composting of animal manures in the planting rows under black polyethylene sheets (BPS), for six weeks during September and October (composting method) were compared to its control by soil solarization using clear polyethylene sheets (CPS) or BPS during July and August.

Soil solarization increased yield and controlled both branched (Orobanche aegyptiace/ ramosa) and nodding (O.

cernua) broomrapes significantly.

Best control results were obtained from soil solarization using BPS, if BPS were kept as mulch during the growing season.

Soil solarization with CPS alone was not better than the traditional cultivation practices for broomrape control.

Hoeing and soil hilling around plants brought about Orobanche emergence.

Solarization without mulching was not better than farmers practice (hoeing) in reducing broomrape infestation or increasing yield.

Broomrape control with composting method followed by BPS mulch was comparable to that in soil solarization method, when both are followed by BPS mulch.
