Impact of financial system reforms on financial development in Algeria

Abstract EN

The objective of this paper is to review policy reforms implementation in different time periods by the government of Algeria for financial development, and to show the extent to which these reforms enhanced the Algerian financial sector development by using various financial development indicators of different segments of the Algerian financial sector.

It is found that the central bank of Algeria has lost relative importance graduallywhich led to increase the central bank independence.However, it is urgent to dismantle financial repression and expand the role of competition and free market forces in banking andfinancial systems.
