Abstract EN

This research studies the majority of Qatari novels that were written between 1993 and 2015.

It aims at establishing a historical record of this literary genre in Qatar as well as analyzing its discursive types.

It makes use of concepts and procedures that are derived from pragmatics, communication studies and cultural studies.

Furthermore, the study tackles the socio-historical aspects of the studied novels.

It defines four phases of the Qatari novel.

The first is the time of beginnings which resulted in pro-tradition novels that expressed a tendency towards the values and style life of the past days.

On the contrary, autobiography occupied the most attention of the second phase.

Qatari autobiographies capture the features of cultural defeat in a changing world.

The third phase was dominated by the historical novels and was characterized by an apparent dramaticity.

The latest phase witnesses the explosion of feminist writing that targeted deconstructing the masculine centrism and its dominant discourse
