Abstract EN

As a result of the suppression of the 1924 uprising the educated Sudanese shifted their interest from political activities to literary studies and self-acculturation.

In response, to this shift many literary societies have raised.

The most noticeable event in the period intervening between 1924 and the rise of Graduate General Congress was Gordon Memorial College students’strike.

Despite the fact that this strike implied national goals and themes but it has paradoxically, led to the fission of graduates into Shawgist and Filist.

Due to the international political changes, a treaty was signed in 1936 between Britain and Egypt.

The treaty’s contracting parties did not consult the Sudanese about their future.

Therefore, the Sudanese realized that self - unification was their sole choice; as a result of this realization Graduate General Congress has arisen in 1938.

The advent of the Graduate General gave birth to the contemporary nationalist movement.

However, the mission of the congress did not go unchallenged due to the internal conflicts.

Even before the elapse of a year of its beginning the Graduate General Congress was faced by several challenges.

Despite all these barriers the Graduate General Congress succeeded in achieving many educational and cultural projects.

The 1942’s memorandum that demanded self - determination has revealed the true image of the congress.

At this juncture the Graduate General Congress was no longer tolerating diversitv of opinions.

This divergence in opinions led to the rise of political parties .consequently, the co-domini began to contain and to attract the nationalists.

At this stage the congress lost its role and prestige as a nationalist organ.

Not only also its role was to a large extent confined in being an umbrella for the unionist parties.

At last but not least, the Graduate General Congress remained the hotbed and the source of almost all the Sudanese political parties as well as the inspiring experience urged different political forces to resist colonization.
