The exterior decorations on the outer coffin of PA-Dj-Jmn (CG 6080-6081)‎ as representation of the funeral procession

Abstract EN

This paper deals with the exterior decorations on the 21“ Dynasty outer coffin of PA-dj-jmn in Cairo Museum as representation of the funeral procession of the deceased.

This procession will be related to the day and night journeys of the sun god Re through the sky.

On the coffin of PA-dj-jmn, scenes referring to ccrtain rituals were placcd in particular places on the coffin for both religious and ritual purposes.

These scenes refer to rituals which have long history- dating back to the Middle Kingdom.

The aim of this paper is to argue how the Middle Kingdom ritual texts were replaced at this later date by the images on the outer coffin of PA-dj-jmn.

It also aims to argue that how certain images and texts were placed on purpose in specific areas on the coffin, implying that the texts and images worked together to ensure an eternal life for the deceased who is placcd within the coffin.

It will also consider attitudes to tlie coffin, not merely as an object, but as part of and objectification of diose rites, and its role as descendant of the mortuary literature and the tomb decoration of earlier periods, towards a better understanding of the material mortuary record of ancient Egypt.
