Abstract EN

The purpose of this study was to prepare floating and prolonged release tablets of metronidazole, those tablets were developed to prolong the gastric residence time that helps to achieve a better eradication of Helicobacter Pylori.

Hydroxy Propyl Methyl Cellulose (HPMC K4M) was used as floating polymer and combined with other polymers like HPMC 15LV and HPMC K100M, and sodium bicarbonate and citric acid as effervescent agents.

The prepared formulations were evaluated in terms their precompression parameters, physical characteristics, floating properties, dissolution test and in vitro drug release kinetic studies.

The results showed that the combination between HPMC K4M and HPMC K100M was the best for preparing floating and prolonged release tablets of metronidazole as in formulation (F6) which had floated for more than 24 hours and released about 98% from its content within 22 hours and its release kinetic was Korsmeyre-Peppas
