Abstract EN

Hotels are seeking methods to modify their structures, strategies, policies and processes to be able to be at the top of the vigorous competition in the marketplace.

A critical part of their re-structuring lies in the way they manage their human capital.

Tremendous emphases are placed on creating awareness of, and incorporating concepts such as empowerment as a means to shift from vertical organization structures embracing management centralization to flatter ones that support decentralization and autonomy.

Even though the mechanisms through which the aforementioned concept is achieved in the hospitality industry have been examined in the literature, a few studies were conducted to analyse its structure as well as the variables that could affect its implementation.

The objective of this research study is to cover this gap.

This is done through clearly determining the constituents of empowerment in.

the hospitality industry in Egypt and identifying employee socio-demographic variables that could affect its implementation.

A well-defined methodology was tailored to suit the nature of the research.

A model for the concept structure was set and the SPSS was used for data analysis.

Results indicated a casual approach to the implementation of empowerment.

There is no unified or even systematic model to follow and there are no criteria to measure the concept’s impact in Egyptian hotels.

There was a gap between senior management’s and employees’ perception of the constituents of empowerment indicating that the concept has not been embedded in the hotels’ culturc.

Recommendations were provided to help Egyptian hotels in a better dissemination and implementation of the concept
