English Abstract
Background: Osteoporosis is a systemic skeletal disorder, characterized by low bone mass and microarchitectural deterioration of bone tissue, leading to enhanced bone fragility and a consequent increase in fracture risk.
In humans, changes in estrogen status due to advancing age and menopause have been associated with bone loss.
Ghrelin is a novel peptide hormone consist of a (28) -amino acid primarily synthesized by the stomach and released in response to fasting, and this hormone play role in bone physiology.
Objective: This study was designed to evaluate the effect of the antiresoptive a bisphosphonate(BPs) drug "Alendronate tablet" on serum ghrelin level.
Methods: Twenty three postmenopausal women with( mean ± SD age, 64.3±8.3y), diagnosed as osteoporotic patients by measuring the bone mineral density (BMD ) by Dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) and treated by Alendronate tablets (70mg/once weekly) for three months during1st November 2011 to 1st March 2012 .The study was conducted in Ibn Sina Teaching hospital in Mosul city.
Serum ghrelin hormone concentration was measured before and after treatment with a commercial Enzyme-Linked Immune Sorbent Assay (ELISA) kit.
Results: This study showed that three months treatment with alendronat drug led to a statistical significant ( p<0.05 ) increment (21.41%) in the basal serum level of ghrelin hormone and there was a significant inverse correlation between ghrelin and body mass index( BMI).
Conclusion: This study concluded that alendronate treatment have lead to a statistical significant increase in the serum ghrelin level in osteoporotic post-menopausal women.
