Abstract EN

This paper describes a participatory learning approach based on social media as a new method of teaching.

This study has identified a new scientific theoretical frame based on scientific theories, such as social learning theory and theory of active learning.

The researchers theorize that means of modern education technology, especially social media, provide a social interactive environment.

When the learner is active in this environment, he/she activates participatory learning.

Accordingly, the present study applied a scientific experiment, the first of its kind in this area, to examine the effectiveness of this new educational approach in the academic achievement of students at a middle school in the State of Kuwait during the academic year (2013/2014).

The sample, consisting of 62 students, was divided into three groups; the first group used the participatory learning approach based on social media; the second group used social media without interaction; the third group learned without any means of social media.

The treatment was built using YouTube on the subject of Islamic Education for the sixth grade level.

The study concluded that there were no significant differences between the groups.

Recommendations were drawn based on these findings and in light of the findings of similar studies.
