Abstract EN

The current study was conducted to determine the technical needs for visually impaired students at Saudi universities.

Using the descriptive method, a survey of (56) items was administered during the first semester of the academic year 2012 to a population sample of (37) visually impaired male and female students from 3 different Saudi universities.

Findings revealed an extreme shortage and weak infrastructure of technical facilities and/or learning resources provided to visually impaired students at all Saudi universities where the study took place.

Also, there is an extreme shortage of specialized academic staff, qualified technicians and experts in the field of visual impairment.

Further, no/or very few incentives are provided to such experts if present.

The paper recommends to improve the universities’ infrastructures by securing technical needs and recruiting specialized experts and academic staff for visually impaired students as early as possible.
