Abstract EN
This study was conducted to identify the criteria based on which female vice-deans are selected/ appointed in Saudi universities.
It also aimed at identifying their training needs.
Criteria included personal characteristics, administrative skills, academic expertise and participation in university and community activities.
Using the descriptive method, a survey was administered to a population sample (representing 5% of the study population) of randomly selected female academic staff from (4) Saudi universities, as well as all deans and vice-deans at those universities; namely, King Saud University, King Abdul Aziz University, Najran University and Tabuk University.

These were followed by administrative skills (4.10); namely (dealing with superiors, subordinates and public, capacity to prioritize, crisis management, decision-making and communication skills).
With an average of (3.99), academic criteria came in the third position.
These included (monitoring and solving female students’ problems, improving the quality of education and enabling faculty members to achieve professional growth).
Participation in university and community activities had a score of (3.99).
Sub-criteria in this area included knowledge of university activities and community needs, participation in cultural, scientific and social activities for female students, as well as the ability to motivate and encourage faculty members to participate in community services.
Respondents agreed on the importance of training needs with an average of (4.12).
Training areas came in the following order: decision-making, identifying problems and their causes, task prioritizing, motivating academic staff to attain their objectives and capacity to create and lead a team.
