English Abstract

The idea of war has a broad connotation.

No matter whether it is in poetry, fiction or drama, it has been one of the important themes to be explored by critics and researchers.

With Hemingway, the theme of war deserves to be discussed because most of his fiction deals with the experience of the protagonists during wartime.

Therefore, this study offers a critical analysis of the theme of war in two prominent works of Hemingway: A Farewell to Arms and For whom the Bell Tolls.

Many critical works have been produced on the theme of war from different perspectives.

This thesis tries to make use of the most relevant and recent of these critical works in order to analyse the theme of war in the selected novels.

Thus, it is divided into three chapters and a conclusion.

The first chapter consists of an introduction to the study of the theme of war as one of the main themes in Hemingway’s novels.

In the second and third chapters respectively, the theme of war and its impact on the main characters are critically explored and investigated as depicted in the two novels.

The studied novels present different aspects of the characters involved in the theme of war, whether it is Jordan Baker in For Whom the Bell Tolls or Frederick Henry in A Farewell to Arms where war dominates the scene in these works.

Finally, the conclusion puts forward the findings and results of the discussions of the previous three chapters.

The method used throughout the work can be described as textual and critical relying on the novels as primary sources and other secondary sources casting additional light on the topic of the work.
