Abstract EN

Diane Glancy is a Native American playwright.

Glancy’s plays show her ability to weave together different cultures in both narrative and descriptive senses.

Through her plays, she is able to manipulate these aspects of borderlands to create a sense of fragmentation that mirrors the disintegration of Native American culture, often achieved through her use of abrupt, shifting language structures.

At the same time, she presents the ways of bridging the differences.

Her play, The Woman Who Was a Red Deer Dressed for the Deer Dance (1995) depicts the conflict between two generations, Grandmother and Girl.

The state of ambivalence is resolved by finding a third space.

Storytelling, spirituality, and traditions are the means to bridge the gap among different cultures.

The playwright believes that cultural identity is essential in a society of cultural differences.

Girl in The Woman Who Was a Red Deer Dressed for the Deer Dance has a state of cultural denial.

The young girl tries to understand her grandmother and has to fill the spaces and silence in their communication with her own experience and ideas.

Grandmother emphasizes the significance of storytelling and spiritual heritage as a means of survival to bring the isolated self into harmony with reality.

They heal the state of diaspora Girl suffers from.

Girl’s isolated identity is represented by the struggle between her and Grandmother which is healed at the end of the play.
