Abstract EN
In this paper, an argument is made to account for and justifiably assess the relation between modern pragmatic theory of language, as recently introduced by prominent scholars, and some aspects of long-standing Arabic rhetoric.
The focus is on the contributions old Arab rhetoricians made by discussing such areas of linguistic communication that are significantly figuring out in the current discussions of contemporary linguists.
Some of the key concepts in present-day theory of pragmatics, e.g.
context, presupposition, implicature, speech act, can be traced back to a tradition of speculates in the vast heritage of Arabic rhetoric, though there might be here certain instances where some of the points are not all coherently presented.
These concepts are complemented, developed, refined or formalized by contemporary western pragmaticists and philosophers of language.
