Abstract EN

The research reveals the semiotics of character personality in the novel "The Gypsy and the Serpent" by the Saudi novelist Ibrahim Al-Naser Al-Humaidan, which were an attempt to explore the marks and meanings of the characters in the novel "Gypsy and the Serpent" and identifying types of characters and their functions and its semiotic signs, and how the narrator was able to engaging them in the composition of the novel events; resorting to what is ended up in the modern western studies with a view to determining their semiotic significance and the extent to which they achieve this goal or beyond it.

The research included a preliminary introduction to the subject, importance of the research, purpose of it, reasons for its selection, methodology used, definition of the personality character, its importance, stages of its development, its study in modern western studies, and its most famous theorists since Vladimir Brob, through Grimas, and the finally developing by Philip Hamon.

Then applying all that on the novel of the "Gypsy and the Serpent" through exploration of the functions of the personality from several hubs; including the personality and the mark, and dealing with types of personality within the novel, and focusing on the sign of the character and its meaning in the novel, in which it revealed the semiotic signs of personality, names, characteristics, and the presentation manner of it in the novel At the end of the research, the characters of the novel combine the realism and the mythical, but mythical world and its events dominated the realism.

This use revealed the semiotic signs of mythical characters and their relation to realism, which I referred to in their context recited in
