A field experiment was conducted in Izraa Research Station (Daraa, Syria) affiliated to Arab Center for the Studies in Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD), during two consecutive growing seasons (2012/ 2013 and 2013 /2014), in order to study the effect of conservation agriculture on growth parameters and productivity of durum wheat in rotation with vetch crop comparing with conventional tillage system.
The experiment was laid out using randomized complete block design with three replicates.
The results showed significant differences between conservation and conventional agriculture systems in the mean number of days to heading and maturity and plant height of durum wheat plants.
The mean value of 1000-kernel weight, grain yield and biological yield were significantly higher under conservation agriculture system (38.27 g, 1843.67 kg.ha-1 and 6566.67 kg.ha-1 respectively) compared to conventional agriculture system.
Meanwhile, vetch crop was grown in rotation with wheat crop in the second season, as the highest seed and biological yield were recorded under conservation agriculture system (1311.67 kg.ha-1 and 3384.00 kg.ha-1 respectively) compared to conventional system, which indicated the importance of applying conservation agriculture system as an integrated package of practices for improving the productivity of cereal crop (durum wheat) grown in rotation with legume crop (vetch).
