The french-american affront in matters of comparative litterature takes on its full meaning, historically speaking, only to a strictly and limited extent in the fact that both ideological and cultural bases of the two schools are not really confronted by convergence.

If the French school has well initiated and theorized its comparative approach, according to its own vision of litterature, this would not give it, from the American point of view, the right to have control over the comparative approach nor reinforce its position as a referent.

For the French school, the American approach although it is influential for reasons that are not always cultural,it should remain indebted to European practices as they served as the bases for its ideology .
