Case study or case formulation is research tool in clinical psychology.

Early psychologist, in the 20th century, used case formulation to expose and explain their ideas and the results of their studies of the human psyche, as an exploration method.

Even though isn’t an affirmative tool , many psychologists used case formulation as an instrument to affirm their opinions or a tool to reach some generalized results by gathering lots of case studies .

case formulation is based on some principles , imposes a special method and exiges some rules and standards that every practice should apply and respect so that his formulation reach an adequate level of consistency , credibility and accuracy
