Calcium and phosphorus metabolism in diabetes mellitus

In this work, we studies some of calcium and phosphorus metabolism and associated hormones (Parthroid hormone PTH and Calcitonin.

Ct) in 40 diabetic and 15 healthy control subjects.

The diabetic group was subdivided into 4 subgroups : 2 groups with IDDM (uncontrolled and controlled) and 2 groups with N1DDM (uncontrolled and controlled).

Blood samples were taken from all subjects for estimation of serum calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, magnesium, total proteins, albumin, creatinine, urea, glucose, PTH and Ct.

Urinary excretion of phosphorus and calcium was estimated.

Radiological examination was done for bone density.

The parameters measured in these groups showed non significant changes in serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase, magnesium, total serum proteins, urinary phosphorus excretion per 24 hours and PTH basal and after IV calcium".

Serum phosphorus was significantly mcrenscd in the group of controlled NIDDM.

Urinary calcium excretion per 24 hours showed significantly higher levels in uncontrolled IDDM.

In addition, serum basal.

Ct was significantly low in both groups of IDDM.

However, Ct level after IV calcium showed insignificant difference between all groups.

Serum albumin level was significantly decreased in IDDM.

Radiological examination revealed evidence of osteoporosis in some diabetic subjects.

We concluded that the dcfect in the bone mass seems more likely to be a defect related, to other factors rather than to calcium and phosphorus homeostasis.
