Abstract EN

The study illustrates the features of the Somali Journalism during the period of civil and military rule (1960-1991).

It aims at identifying the most important characteristics of Somali Journalism and determine its positive and negative sides in order to benefit from that early stage.

The researcher used the historical descriptive method to trace the point start of the Somali Journalism, the reasons for their publication and the stages that have passed.

The researcher used the primary references Somali, Arabic and foreign written available to him.

Among the findings of the study: the national Somali Journalism had a great role during the awakening the national consciousness and the growth of the Somali national movement in the period of colonialism and trusteeship.

The Journalism in the era of civilian government rule was characterized by expansion in terms of quantity and quality, but it deteriorated during the military rule because of nationalization Private institutions and the monopoly of the state for all institutions, including the Jounalism.

The researcher recommends the raise of public awareness on the importance of Journalism in addressing the problems of society and the continuous evaluation of the Somali Journalism and the media in general.
