The effects of various physicochemical parameters on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) on maghemite NPs (-Fe2O3 NPs) were examined, in particular, the pH, hexachromium concentration (Cr(VI)), adsorbent dosage, salinity and the commonly coexisting ions Ba2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, NO3 -, Cl-, SO4 2-, PO4 3-, at room temperature for a contact time of 3 hrs.
For an industrial, economic and environmental aims, the reusability efficiency of the NPs was tested for six adsorptiondesorptionregeneration cycles.
The pH effect was studied in the range of 06.
The maximum removal efficiency and uptake capacity were observed in the acidic region around pH 01.
The influence of the adsorbent dosage was studied at pH 1.0 by varying the concentration of NPs in the range 1.07.0 g.L-1 at a fixed initial Cr(VI) concentration of 50 mg.L-1.
In the dosage range (20.0100.0 g.L-1) of the explored NPs, the removal efficiency increased in a monotonous manner.
On the other hand, increasing salinity from 0 to 5.0 % NaCl had no significant effect on the efficiency of Cr(VI) removal.
An investigation of the effects of the commonly coexisting ions (Ba2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Cu2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, NO3 -, Cl-, SO4 2-, PO4 3-) indicated noticeable effects only with the Pb2+, SO4 2- and PO4 3- ions.
