Abstract EN

The adhesion between coating and substrate is a crucial factor in determining the performance of coated engineering components.

The adhesions of coating-substrate system are affected by intrinsic and extrinsic factors included coating thickness, coating hardness and substrate pretreatment.

The mechanisms of coating failure have been studied to understand the behavior of the coating system under certain loading conditions.

Methods of developing the coating-substrate systems are discussed for its advantages and disadvantages.

Discussion of the methods used to evaluate the adhesion strength, namely the indentation test, scratch test, and laser spallation technique are reviewed.
