Abstract EN

This research aims at studying relationship between urban changes and heat islands formation at Tanta City, Gharbia Governorate using remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) techniques.

Multispectral Landsat imageries were used to map Iand-cover and to detect changes in built-up areas.

Thermal bands were used to retrieve Land Surface Temperature (LST) in the city.

Moreover, urban heat islands (UHI) areas were detected and mapped using standard deviation segmenting method.

Statistical analyses were conducted to study relationship between LST and built-up areas.

Results revealed that enormous urban growth took place during the investigated period with reduction of Agricultural areas.

This was accompanied with increase in urban heat islands intensity reaching a mean of +2.5°C.

A strong positive correlation (0.9) was recorded between built-up areas and LST in the city.
