Abstract EN

Background & Objective: Conventional clasp-retained removable partial dentures (RPDs) serve as the first prosthodontic treatment option for partially edentulous patients.

The purpose of this study was to describe the frequency of different classes of partial edentulism and the usage of RPDs delivered by undergraduate students of Damascus University by using telephone call one-year after delivery.

Methods & Materials: 409 clinical records of patients who had RPDs were reviewed.

Data for a structured questionnaire were collected and contained information about the patient, Kennedy classification, the RPD and the usage of the RPDs.

Collected data was statistically analyzed using SPSS version 17 at p <0.05.

Results: The age of the patients was 50 ± 10.2 years.

Most of the patients was males (64.5%).

Kennedy Class I was the most common partial edentulism (42%), Class II, III, and IV had the percentages of 39%, 17%, 2% respectively.

Most of the delivered RPDs were acrylic resin dentures (94.3%).

40.2% of the dentures are not used, 9.2% are used sometimes, 13.5% are often used, and 37.1% are always used.

Of those dentures which are not currently used, 78% have never been worn since delivery.

Only 19% of the patients had one or more recall appointment.

No statistically significant association between patient gender and their respective Kennedy classification was found.

Conclusions: under the limitations of this study, the most frequent classes of partial edentulism were class I and II.

More efforts should be exerted to increase the low percentage of using RPDs in Damascus University
