Abstract EN

In spite of the numerous and detailed studies dealing with the mosaic floors of the Churches of Jordan in the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, researchers ignored any possible link with the world of magic and magical practices.

This paper presents a new interpretation concerning certain elements in church mosaic floors (in particular interlace ornament such as plait work and knot work), anticipating their specific apotropaic function beyond the merely decorative one.
