Abstract EN

This study examined the effect of dietary β-cyclodextrin (βCD) on carcass characteristics of sheep.

Twenty four clinically and healthy commercial Saidi male lambs, with an average body weight of 24.5 kg and average age of 6 month, were used in this study.

Lambs were divided randomly into four experimental groups (6 lambs each).

The first group was fed on concentrate mixture with no supplement (control).

Second, third and fourth groups were fed on the same control diet supplemented with 3 %, 5 % and 7 % beta-cyclodextrin per kg diet, respectively.

All animal groups were fed on roughage ad libitum.

Water was available at all times.

Body Weight was not significantly affected by BetaCyclodextrin supplementation.

Carcass and dressing weights increased in group receiving 5% βCD compared with other groups.

βCD supplementation decreased Liver and kidney weights.

No significant effect of treatment on heart and spleen weights was found.

Supplementation of βCD decreased carcass length and Leg length, while increased leg circumference.

Fat of best rib (L) tended to decrease in all treated groups, particularly that of group receiving 3% βCD.

βCD increased some carcass parts weight, i.e, fillet, fore rib and sirloin.

In conclusion, lambs fed βCD may improved some carcass characteristics.

Also 3% βCD of concentrate mixture may decreased fat content of sheep carcass.
