Information and Communications Technology was for long seen as a consumer of energy, but recently it has demonstrated its ability to make a positive contribution to the energy field in various ways, particularly the Internet of Things.

Its applications present a bundle of creative solutions, and represent a major leap forward for the impact of technology and networking on the contemporary world and an opportunity for more direct incorporation of the physical world into computer-based systems, in a way that improves efficiency, accuracy, and economic benefit, and changes the future of energy.

In this paper, El Sayed Yousef explores this new model which is changing conventional energy systems, in terms of production and consumption, generation and distribution, and the implications of this for energy producers and users in the near future through "smart electricity grids", "virtual power stations", "smart transmission", and "smart cities".
