The Lusaka Summit, held in July 2001, decided to establish, within the African Union, the Peace and Security Council.
Its protocol was adopted in Durbain on 9 July 2001, but it took two years for its entry into force.
The CPSAU is based on the model of the UN Security Council.
It is therefore the principal organ of the Union in the field of peace and security.
CPSAU's intervention in the area of peace and security in Africa is part of the maintenance of peace and international security.
