Environmental sensitivity to desertification is one of the most important problems that are facing arid and semi-arid regions along the world.

This phenomenon could be either human-induced or due to adverse natural conditions or both, which is common.

The main objectives of this study were to evaluate the environmental sensitivity to desertification in Qaroun Lake region using the Mediterranean Desertification and Land Use (MEDALUS) model to identify Environmental Sensitivity Areas (ESAs) to desertification in the region.

In this model spatial data about soil characteristics, vegetation, climate and management were integrated under the GIS environment for evaluating the ESAs in the region.

The matic layers were extracted and manipulated from the available soil, topographic, and geologic maps of the region.

Field observations, soil sample analyses and satellite images, were also used in this work.

Spatial analyst in ArcGIS 10.5 software was used for matching the obtained thematic layers and assessing the Desertification Sensitivity Index (DSI), from which sensitive areas to desertification were assigned.

The study attention with: physical characteristics for Qaroun Lake region, environmental sensitivity of Qaroun Lake region, and suitable development of Qaroun Lake region.

In conclusion, it is recommended to take certain measures, especially these measures that enhance soil, vegetation, and management qualities to protect and sustain land resources in Qaroun Lake region against desertification.
