Abstract EN

This quantitative study aims to identify the social factors affecting the choice of academic specialization and its impact on the attitudes of university students towards their specialization- The study was conducted using an exploratory social survey, and an intentional representative sample was chosen among those enrolled in the University of Jordan academic year 2016/2017.

Students from all colleges currently taking compulsory pre-requisite courses were included- The results of the study revealed that social factors (family, school, and self-factors) exert moderate levels of influence upon university students in their selection of academic specialization.

The family is the most important social factors, followed by the subjective factors and the schools.

The results also show that selffactors have a significant effect on directing students toward their specialization, while the school has an adverse effect on student attitudes.

Meanwhile the family has no significant effect in those directions • The study recommends focusing on the role schools play in helping students understand their abilities and aspirations before graduation.

Furthermore, schools and associations should inform students of employment opportunities available to them after graduation.

They should also consider conducting informational sessions for matriculating students, with the aim of helping them to choose a specialization that provides future job security.
