Abstract EN

Ionizing radiation is used in various disciplines of biology including basic and applied entomology.

gamma radiation, x-rays and e-beam are some of the most used kinds of ionizing radiation.

in this article, basic principles of radiation biology are discussed.

various perspectives of the applications of ionizing radiation in applied entomology are also discussed.

radiation mediated sterile insect technique (sit) is an environmentallyfriendly control method against some key insect pests.

inherited (f1) sterility has also been developed for managing the serious lepidopteran pests.

in addition, insect disinfestations of agro-commodities for quarantine and phytosanitary purposes and augmentation of biological control are options.

furthermore, radiation hormesis for enhancing the efficacy of useful insects and industrial applications, particularly in honey bee and silk production, are the numerous applications.
