Abstract EN

The study discusses both the Kaolin of Merowi in Northern Sudan as a material containing a moderate amount of alumina (which is used in the production of refractory materials) and the white sand of Jebel awliya dam south of Khartoum , which contains a large amount of silica .

It also discusses the addition there to of fine wood dust (to decrease weight and stop cracking) as well as commercial white Portland cement and lime from north of Port Sudan as property -improving additives .

The aim of the study is to determine a suitable product that can work in low - or moderate - fire kilns.

Experimental mixes were numbered and fired to between 1120° and 1140° C to replicate the capacity of locally available kilns .

Both negative and positive properties were observed after firing and after the production of a large amount of refractory bricks made from the tested materials.

These bricks were used to build a kiln, through which their efficacy for refractory use was tested.
