Arabic Abstract

يعد طغيان الحاكم و استبداده أحد أبرز الأسباب التي تؤثر سلبا في البنية الاجتماعية و الإقتصادية و السياسية للمجتمعات المختلفة من ناحية أخرى، قامت الأعمال الأدبية على مر العصور بانتقاد النظم الاستبدادية و التحذير من العواقب المحتملة لأفكار الحكام المتطرفة.

و مع ذلك، فإن عددا قليلا من الأعمال الأدبية استطاع أن ينجح في تصوير هذه الظاهرة المدمرة كما فعلت رواية 1984 للكاتب الإنجليزي جوروج أورويل و رواية خريف البطريرك للكاتب الكولومبي غابرييل غارسيا ماركيز.

يقوم هذا البحث بتناول هذين العملين الأدبيين بالتحليل و المقارنة و يركز على إبراز السمات و الخصائص الأساسية للإستبداد و الدكتاتورية و الشمولية في العملين مع الإشارة بصفة خاصة إلى شخصيتي "الأخ الأكبر" في رواية 1984 و شخصية "الجنرال" في رواية خريف البطريرك و ذلك لما تجسده هاتان الشخصيتان من شتى صور السلطة الفاسدة و الظالمة يهدف هذا البحث إلى إبراز صورة واضحة للطغيان كما يمارس في العالم الواقعي من خلال تحليل هذه الظاهرة الإجتماعية السياسية كما تم تصويرها في الروايتين.

يقوم الجانب النظري لهذه الأطروحة بكشف النقاب عن مصادر الإلهام المختلفة و الجذور التاريخية لكل من الروايتين اللتين تعودان في أصلهما إلى أنظمة استبدادية حديثة من القرن العشرين و يدرس الجانب التطبيقي من هذا البحث عوالم الروايتين و حكوماتهما و حكامهما.

في سياقاتهما المحددة و ذلك لتسليط الضوء على الموضوع قيد المناقشة.

English Abstract

The tyranny of the leader has always had a devastating impact on the social texture of a country as well as the economic, political and cultural structures of it.

Literature, on the other hand, has long been a powerful vehicle for displaying and criticizing tyrannical systems and warning against the possible consequences of their extreme actions and thoughts.

Yet, few literary works have been as successful as George Orwell’s 1984 (1949) and Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s The Autumn of the Patriarch (1975) in representing this destructive phenomenon.

In this thesis, these two novels are subjected to a critical and comparative analysis concentrating on the representation of the essential features and characteristics of tyranny, dictatorship and totalitarianism in the two aforementioned works with special reference to the two main tyrannical leaders; Big Brother in Orwell’s and the General in Garcia Marquez’s.

The main aim is to offer a clear picture of tyranny as it is practiced in the real world by analyzing how this socio-political phenomenon is depicted in the two novels.

The theoretical side of this thesis unravels the various sources of inspiration for both novels since these two works root back to modern tyrannical regimes of the 20th century.

The practical side examines the two worlds, governments, leaders, and societies as represented in the two novels in accordance with their own special contexts so as to highlight them in terms of the topic under discussion.
