Hypothyroidism is the result of thyroid hormone deficiency that may be peripheral or central.
The prevalence of primary hypothyroidism is the most important, especially in women and the elderly.
Clinical signs are nonspecific with poor semiology.
Confirmation of hypothyroidism is currently based on statistically defined reference ranges for TSH and free thyroxine.
The thyroid hormone requirements are depending on the weight and depth of hypothyroidism.
A special attention should be reached to complicated forms especially for elderly patients with coronary insufficiency.
Screening indications are becoming more and more widespread, mainly during pregnancy.

L’hypothyroïdie est la conséquence d’un déficit en hormones thyroïdiennes qui peut être d’origine périphérique ou centrale.
La prévalence de l'hypothyroïdie primaire est plus importante surtout chez les femmes et les sujets âgés.
Les signes cliniques sont non spécifiques avec une sémiologie pauvre.
La confirmation de l’hypothyroïdie est actuellement basée sur des plages de référence statistiquement définies pour la TSH et la thyroxine libre.
Les besoins en hormones thyroïdiennes sont en fonction du poids et la profondeur de l'hypothyroïdie.
Une attention particulière doit être portée pour les formes compliquées essentiellement chez les patients âgés ayant une insuffisance coronaire.
Les indications de dépistage deviennent de plus en plus larges essentiellement chez les femmes enceintes.
