Evaluation of organic and microbial contamination in the sediments of Euphrates river at the center of Al-Nasiriya city, south of Iraq

Abstract EN

The present study was conducted to assess the organic pollution and microbial contamination in the Euphrates River sediments in AL-Nasiriya city, southern Iraq, four station were selected in the 6 km long study area for the period from autumn 2017 until summer 2018.

sediments samples were collected during these period.

The first station was 1 km ahead of the power plant.

The second station is located at the power station.

the third was located at the wastewater treatment plant.it is about 4km away from the second station ,the fourth station was located at the third station by 1km for from third station.

The study included the measurement of some physical and chemical characteristics of the river water.

It also included measuring the concentration of some trace elements (cadmium, copper, lead and zinc) in sediments.

The total organic carbon was also analyzed.

And expressed as pecentage coliform and Fecal Coliform (Escherichia coli) as evidence of fecal contamination and total number of air bacteria were estimated
