Abstract EN

The present study has been carried out to investigate the possible therapeutic effect of curcumin loaded iron oxide nanoparticles (MNP-CUR) administered through intraperitoneal (i.p) injection after whole body gamma irradiation of rats.

Whole body gamma irradiation of rats at 6 Gy (single dose) caused significant reduction in red blood cells count, hemoglobin levels, lymphocytes, neutrophils, and monocytes associated with highly significant elevation in malondialdehyde (MDA).

The reduction in catalase (CAT) activity and the reduced levels of glutathione GSH were observed after three weeks post-irradiation.

Administration of MNP-CUR after irradiation resulted in a significant improvement of the hematological parameters andreduced changes in MDA, GSH and CAT levels were induced by gamma irradiation. The combination of MNP and CUR was found to be advantageous for the after-exposure treatment because the effect of radiation is stealth.

An individual may spend days, weeks or even months exposed to radiation doses without becoming alarmed.

Exposure to ionizing radiation is known to have an effect on the body cells, especially the blood cells and cause a marked decline in their viability and proliferation.
