English Abstract

The acid rain has a serious effect on the durability of reinforced concrete, especially when the pH value of the acid rain decreased lower than a certain limit.

The acid rain can cause erosion of concrete stone and corrosion of steel reinforcement.

This research is carried out to study the effect of simulated acid rain on strength and corrosion performance of slurry infiltrated steel fiber concrete.

Different steel fiber contents (1.5, 6, 8 and 10%) were investigated.

The efficiency of using local metakaolin, corrosion inhibitor admixture and epoxy protective coating to improve the concrete mixes performance were also investigated.

The concrete mixes were immersed in diluted nitric acid for 180 days.

Compressive strength, flexural strength, corrosion rate, corrosion potential, electrical resistivity, total porosity and change in weight tests were carried out.

Results indicated that slurry infiltrated steel fiber concrete mixes were able to develop compressive and flexural strength satisfactory after 180 days of immersion in diluted nitric acid, where the percentage of increase in compressive and flexural strength ranged between (22- 60 %) and (45-89%) respectively.

Specimens with epoxy protective coating showed the best performance with regard to strength development and corrosion resistance comparing to other concrete mixes.

Using of local metakaolin and/ or corrosion inhibitor also enhance the performance of slurry infiltrated steel fiber concrete mixes as compared to non-traded mixes.
