Abu Tammam, by creating an evolution and an innovation in the structure and subjects of the old Arabian poetry ,has caused a considerable controversy amid critics who did state differently, between supporters for his poetry, viewing him as a school and a doctrine leader in poetry and role model, and opponents for his poetry for not respecting the customary Arabian poetry column, because of what he tends to in terms of distance from meaning , oddness and in exaggerating to use metaphor.

Al-Amidi is among the first critics to criticize and analyze poems of Abu tammam, in his book "El-mowazana" since he tends to weigh and balance between Abu tammam and el-bohtori.
