Investigating students’ motivation in learning Arabic as a second language

Abstract EN

This study addresses motivation and its role in learning Arabic language among the eleventh grade students of Tehran- district 17.

The statistical population of the study consisted of 120 randomly selected male and female students.

Accordingly, six eleven grade classes were evaluated and studied in various fields of human sciences, empirical sciences and mathematics.

The method of this research is based on the Noels method and conducting statistical tests using SPSS software.

The results show that motivation level of girls in this district with a mean rank of 39.68 is significantly higher than boys' motivation with a mean rank of 81.32 in learning Arabic language.

According to the Mann-Whitney test, higher mean rank indicates lower level of learning, and vice versa.

This suggests the impact of gender on learning Arabic.

Another result shows that the mean rank of extrinsic motivation relative to intrinsic motivation is 145.03 to 95.97 which indicates that extrinsic motivations are more effective than intrinsic motivations and enjoy a higher level of significance.

Additionally, the religion factor with the mean rank of 197.81 has the highest influence on learning Arabic.

By examining the mean rank of motivation it was observed that identified regulation has a greater effect on Arabic language learning than intrinsic and extrinsic regulations and the intrinsic and extrinsic regulations are among the next influential factors respectively.
