A conversational analysis of selected conversations from the glorious Quran

Abstract EN

This paper focuses on the analysis of some selected Quranic conversations from the perspective of conversation analysis.

Conversation analysis as it is known explores spoken interaction and naturally occurring conversations in natural settings.

In other words, it is believed that turn taking is concerned with the analysis of spoken conversations rather than written ones.

In this paper, an attempt is made to analyse written conversations from the glorious Quran to find out if the system, rules, components and facts of turn taking apply to written conversations the way they apply to spoken ones.

To achieve the aim of this paper the analysis will be conducted on two levels.

First, the selected Quranic conversations are analysed in terms of the rules, the components, the used adjacency pairs and the facts and of the turn taking system.

Second, an attempt is made to find out the structure of Quranic conversations.

Analysis of the selected Quranic conversations reveals that the strategies employed in spoken conversations are also employed in written ones as far as rules, components, facts, adjacency pairs and preference system are concerned.

It also reveals that Quranic conversations have a structure of opening and closing conversations and employing more than one speaker in one conversation.
