Abstract EN

One of the negative social phenomena that the Kurdish community faces is harassing women.

Harassment in this study means any act or speech with sexual connotation, practiced by men and not liked by women, which violates the privacy, body or the feelings of women, and leads to women’s feeling of insecurity, discomfort or disrespect.

The aims of the study can be summed up as follows: 1- identifying the aspects and kinds of the sexual harassment in the Kurdish community, and spotting the places or locations where harassment occurs.

2- Recognizing the methods and the mechanisms of dealing with this phenomenon in the Kurdish community.

3- Naming the laws and penalties of harassment, if found, in the special penal law of the Iraqi Kurdistan.

4- Identifying the reasons behind the phenomenon.

The method used in this study is Case Study Methodology.

The sample of the study is the Purposive Sample, using different tools to collect the data, like observation and interview.

The study has come up with some findings as follows: 1- The individuals of the sample most have emphasized that the habits and the traditions of the society are the main reason behind this phenomenon.

They believe that harassment is an act of violence against women.

It doesn’t necessarily stem from sexual desires, but it may stem from men’s motive of authoritarianism or the desire to humiliate women.

2- Many studies have proved that a major reason behind harassment is men’s feeling of certainty that they will not be punished for their act, because of the weakness of the laws that incriminate this act.

3- One of the reasons is also women’s fear of the scandal and disgrace of their reputation, because she is the one who is accused in the first place.
