Abstract EN
This study discusses the debates over NATO’s persistence and its efforts to expand.
It examines the arguments and factors presented by rhetoric of alliance theory, and tries to put these debates and discussions in one central question: is NATO's survival and its continued enlargement necessary, natural and functional? The study also notes that despite the optimism and idealism that enhanced by the successful integration of many countries in the “Euro-Atlantic club”, and despite the movement of NATO towards "globalization," the alliance is facing many hidden obstacles and problems which will probably facing it in the future.
The study, in its attempt to analyze conflicting discourses and views about the reality and the future of the alliance, is trying to present some attitudes in this regard, without aiming to give a definitive answer whether NATO should be enlarged or not.
The reason is that the enlargement is a vague, broad and unresolved matter, both for academics, inside NATO’s institutions or between alliance actors.
