Abstract EN

This study aimed at exploring the predictive ability of the Big Five Personality Traits and the learning environment to predict the Surface and Deep Learning styles among students at Yarmouk University during the academic year 2017/ 2018.

The researchers used the descriptive correlational approach.

The study population consisted of 26,597 students.

The sample of the study consisted of 1000 university students and were selected by the available method.

The researchers applied the R2F - Study Process Scale, Big Five Personality Traits Scale and Course Experience Scale on the sample.

The results revealed that Deep Learning style and agreeableness were prevalent among the sample.

There were statistically significant differences among the sample in deep learning style levels due to gender, in favor of female students, and due to the level of education, in favor of first year students.

There were no statistically significant differences due to the academic major.

The results showed that method of assessment, neuroticism, appropriate workload, conscientiousness, and emphasis on independence predicted Surface Learning style and fostered it.

Whereas, efficient teaching, conscientiousness, general skills, clear goals and standards, emphasis on independence, openness to experience, extraversion predicted and fostere Deep Learning style.

In the light of the results, the researchers recommended enlightening students with their personality traits and developing students› learning environment to correspond with their learning styles.
