Methyl bromide (MB), a widely used fumigant for insect disinfestation of agricultural products, was found to be an ozone depleting substance.
Therefore, the use of this chemical compound has been greatly limited for agricultural use without many options in hand.
Ionizing radiation is one of the most promising alternatives to MB treatment and is being increasingly used, particularly for agricultural products including stored nuts.
This article presents a short review of the importance of nuts, their storage ability, storage problems, particularly insect pests, and the most important insect species encountered on stored nuts.
In addition, it discusses the possibility of using ionizing radiation as an alternative to MB for protecting stored nuts from insect attack, radiation dosages used for this purpose, different available sources of ionizing radiation and the advantages of this method.
