English Abstract

Background and Problem: Gaza Strip established hundreds of buildings in recent decades, without taking into consideration negative environmental impacts or the use of modern construction management methods that reduce waste of time and cost and improve the quality and performance of the project.

These inherent problems need to be solved and considered in order to bring an overall change and improvement in the current scenario of the construction industries.

Lean construction and green building are different methods that are already used to maximize the economic benefits, address quality, reduce waste, and minimize the negative environmental impacts in construction.

Objectives and aims: The aim of this research is to improve the construction industry of Gaza Strip by application of green building (sustainable) with lean approach.

The objectives of this research are to identify the most important benefits from application of lean and green construction and the best factors supporting these philosophies, in addition to measure the degree of knowledge of these approaches to improve the situation of construction industry in Gaza Strip.

Methodology: Literature review and questionnaire survey were used in this study.

155 copies of the questionnaire were distributed randomly to owners, consultants and contractors and 119 copies of the questionnaire were received.

Results: The results of this study revealed that the awareness level of lean & green construction by owners, consultants and contractors in the construction industry in Gaza strip is moderate awareness.

Analyses of the results of the main factors responsible for non-adoption of lean and green construction in Gaza Strip showed that both "Difficulties in importing materials and equipment due to closure of crossings" and "Lack of government statuses supporting these methods" were considered as key factor.

It is worth noting that, "Financiers" and "Government (laws and regulations)" were the most influencing sector and the most contributing sectors to adoption of lean and green construction in Gaza Strip.

Also, the study indicated that there are very important benefits of applying lean and green construction like"Reduce non-useful work that does not add value to work", "Reduce the environmental impact of the construction process" and "Integrating the two methods leads to saving the money needed to complete the project".

Conclusions: It was concluded that there are few studies investigated the concept of lean and green with a view of integrating both concepts on projects, which showed that lean leads to green, but not necessarily vice versa.

However, due to the need of Gaza Strip for a qualitative leap in the field of construction and focus on the environment which is in deterioration and reduces waste in time and cost of projects, this study was performed to show that applying this approach will certainly improve the construction industry in Gaza Strip.
