English Abstract
The Gaza Strip suffers from severe deficit in water resources, which reflected in the quantity and quality of water pumped from groundwater as the only source of water.
The agricultural sector is affected by climate changes, noting the increase in demand for irrigation requirements.
Fresh water in the Gaza Strip is expected to face an increasing deficit in the coming years, opening the way for reuse of treated wastewater for irrigation as an alternative solution to overcome the growing deficit.
The aim of the current research is finding the effects of climate change on the irrigation requirements for selected crops, which can be irrigated by treated wastewater.
The estimated temperature and precipitation by SimCLIM model for the years 2020, 2050 and 2080 which obtained from Gharbia, 20113 were the inputs for CROPWAT model to calculate the irrigation requirements of the studied crops under several expected scenarios of climate change.
The results of CropWat model showed that the irrigation requirement for olive, citrus, palm, grapes, guava and alfalfa currently were 553, 577, 958, 530, 2345 and 813 mm/ dunum/yr and it will be increase by 1.11, 1.24, 1.18, 1.25, 1.09 and 1.14 mm/dunum/yr.
in 2020, respectively, in 2050 it is estimated to be increase by 1.06, 1.06, 1.06, 1.07, 1.06 and 1.07 mm/dunum/yr., respectively while in 2080 irrigation requirement will be increase by 1.09, 1.11, 1.11, 1.11, 1.09 and 1.10 mm/dunum/yr., respectively.
The current treated effluent is not suitable for irrigation due to high salt content, but due to the planned improvement of domestic water quality (desalination plants), the salt content of treated effluent wastewater will be minimized in the future.
