English Abstract
The Gaza Strip is suffering from water shortage caused by over-pumping and from sea water intrusion.
One of the alternatives for water augmentation is the reuse of municipal wastewater In most of reuse systems, soil aquifer treatment (SAT) is carried out for subjecting conventional secondary treatment effluent to tertiary treatment.
This study aims to investigate the effect of soil type and the influence of wetting and drying times on removal of pathogens during SAT.
Field experiments using two types of soil (sandy soil and loamy sand soil) with 3 replicates were carried out through three runs with different operational schedules at the North Gaza Emergency Sewage Treatment Project (NGEST) site, to study the efficiency of SAT system in removal of total coliform and fecal coliform from applied secondary wastewater effluent pumped from basin No.1 at the new infiltration basins located at NGEST.
At the field scale experiment, the average removal percentage of total coliform was 53.35% for sandy soil and 47.86% for loamy sand, whereas, the average removal percentage of fecal coliform was 46.31% for sandy soil and 42.28% for loamy sand.
Likewise the average removal percentage of the total suspended solids (TSS) over all the three runs was about 61.25% for sandy soil and 55.35% for loamy sand.
It was observed that the SAT system performance was affected by the type of soil, operational schedule.
SAT performance using sandy soil (soil B) achieved lower removal of total coliform and fecal coliform
